About Intergroups

“Together we can accomplish what none of us could accomplish separately. This is the simple principle underlying the need for Itergroups. the primary purpose of any group is to carry the message of recovery to the still-suffering debtor. In many instances, a group operating by itself cannot do this effectively. Thus, a group of 10 or 12 members would find it both expensive and difficult to undertake creation of a “hot Line,” or even a telephone line and answering machine, for inquires by potential members. One group might not be able to take advantage of quantity discounts in buying literature from the GSO. These activities, so important in carrying the message, can be facilitated through creation on an Intergroup.

Beyond the basic and fundamental purpose, an Intergroup can serve as a clearinghouse for information. Groups can send representatives to general meetings of an Intergroup and share their experience, strength, and hope in carry the message. New ideas and approaches can be exchanged. Groups can learn what is happening elsewhere in their area and share their knowledge and experience with new or struggling groups.

Intergroups can also provide opportunities for cooperation in fellowship projects beyond the capacity of an one group. Thus, many Intergroups sponsor days of sharing which enable debtors to come together and exchange their recovery, unity, and service stories. A day-long program with workshops and individual speakers and the opportunity for sharing over coffee or lunch can provide an inexpensive and helpful respite for the newcomer still struggling with his/her debting.

Intergroups also participate in the general service structure of D.A. Each Intergroup is entitled to select one Intergroup Service Representative (ISP) to attend the annual World Service Conference (WSC). The ISR serves as the link between the Intergroup, the WSC, and the General Service Board and GSO. The ISR carries the opinion of the Intergroup on world service matters to the Conference and shares the results of the Conference deliberations with the Intergroup. Each Intergroup should try to create a spending plan to send its ISR to the WSC on a regular basis.”

How Intergroups communicates with and supports local meetings and members:

  •  Phone service (helps new members find your group; responds to media requests and other special requests)
  • Current meeting information (web site) and paper meeting lists
  • Web site “Events” page – informing the G.L.A.D.A. community about upcoming events
  • Support for special events hosted by GLADA or your meeting (financial support, experience, strength, hope, people)
  • Public information – carrying the message to the debtor who still suffers
  • Offer suggestions re: questions asked by groups
  • GSR scholarship fund
  • Communicate with other Intergroups for experience, strength, and hope
  • Provide communication between groups – if your group needs support in some way, let us know and we’ll pass the word.

How to communicate with and support Intergroup:

  • Answer calls for the Telephone service
  •  Financial support – the groups are the source of financial support of the Intergroup
  •  Inform Intergroup about meeting changes (day/time/contact information)
  •  Inform Intergroup about events that your group is sponsoring
  •  Fellowship days
  •  Workshops
  • Theme or open meetings (e.g., Abundant, Debt-free Holidays)
  • Attend Intergroup meetings – bring your experience, strength, and hope
  • Bring ideas for service projects to Intergroup – fellowship days, workshops, ways to carry the message to debtors who still suffer inside and outside these rooms
  • Bring your vision to Intergroup
